Oddworld: Soulstorm – Oddtimized Edition is the latest installment in the Oddworld series. This ‘Oddimized’ edition is coming to the Nintendo Switch a year after he’s made inroads on other platforms, and promises to take advantage of a specific configuration of the system. Let’s see if we can take on the challenge.

For those unfamiliar with the series and its order, Soulstorm is a refreshed version of the second Oddworld title, Abe’s Exoddus. This is neither a port nor a remake. It’s actually a reimagining of the 1998 game and serves as a sequel to 2016 Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty, itself a reimagining of the original Abe’s Odyssey. We reviewed the Wii U version at the time, but you can also check out Trev’s switch reviews.

This sequel begins impressively with a cinematic opening that revisits the consequences of the previous title via newspaper articles and dramatic music. appears, desperately trying to outrun robotic enemies known as Slig. A tense scene unfolds, and once the voice acting is complete, we soon find Abe hiding in a ship, asking himself what to do next, which is the dystopian setting of his sci-fi. A great introduction to the world.

Cut 12 hours ago. Following the events of New ‘n’ Tasty, Abe and his fellow Mudokons celebrate their newfound freedom in the nearby desert. As Abe talks to a mysterious shaman, he is told that “this moment is over” and that the fate of his people depends on him. With the creatures escaping, it’s time to take on the role of the fleeing Abe again.

Soulstorm plays like its predecessor, but with tricky platforming sections dotted with puzzles. Abe has several abilities. He can double jump, run, sneak, collect and throw items, and cast. The return of this last ability is still the most useful, allowing Abe to overcome nearby enemies and control them. One of his notable absences is that Abe, hmmm, flatulent, humorously It’s a preference for abilities that are there but useless. This is a darker, more serious outing that may or may not appeal to fans.

Oddworld: Soulstorm - Nintendo Switch - Screen 2

Like the first game, there are many tough parts. Unlike the first game, there are no selectable difficulty levels to manage your expectations. Thankfully, there are many save points scattered throughout the landscape that allow for quick respawning when Abe dies in one of many gruesome ways. ration is not necessarily reduced.

2.5D action is rendered with subtle eye-bending and twisting effects. Despite the dark dystopian theme, the team did a great job with the visuals. We were impressed with the overall feel, especially on the Switch. It seems to have delivered on its promise of delivering a Switch-friendly experience.

Oddworld: Soulstorm - Nintendo Switch - Screen 1

Soulstorm has 15 levels (actually 17 if you can discover them all) and 4 alternate endings, offering a longer experience than its predecessor. Each level displays goals such as the number of survivors, the number of secret areas discovered, and the scavenger level (how many trash cans you’ve found and looted). Leaderboards allow for competition, and multiple endings are determined by the success of rescuing your fellow Mudkon, so true completion is extremely difficult. increase.

Overall, Oddworld: Soulstorm – Oddtimized Edition is a darker sequel to New ‘n’ Tasty, testing the famous Abe on a bigger quest. The high quality cinematic style is impressive and the game works well overall. It’s not as humorous as the original and lacks the nostalgic element that fans of the ’90s version have. However, in 2022, this is a challenging and entertaining platformer that will test your patience and skill.
