Battle of Polytopia is a turn-based strategy game. Have you heard of it? Debuting on iOS devices in 2016, his Android device came later that year, and eventually he came to Steam in 2020. Nintendo Switch is the first home console to receive games, and we’re happy to say it’s a welcome addition.

In the Battle of Polytopia, players grow their civilization. Start with a small piece of land, first create people, then farm and hunt to upgrade your town. This allows for the creation of more people and the expansion of civilization.

These are the basics, but there are many more. I entered Polytopia completely blindly, having never played another version. It took me a while to get used to because there are so many options and I barely understand what they mean or what to do. It’s not difficult, but I recommend playing solo mode like the tutorial first. I immediately jumped into local multiplayer mode. However, it didn’t take long for me to realize how much fun it was.

All games in Polytopia are divided into “turns” (which are turn-based events, after all). Earn a star at the start of each turn. These critical assets allow you to take action. For example, for hunting he needs 2 stars. You can also “Train” to unlock new abilities. These range from hunting and archery to fishing and sailing, not to mention agriculture, strategy, diplomacy and even whaling (hmm). It adds depth to the game and makes it fun to work your way up the training tree and plan your next moves. For example, to unlock sailing, you must unlock fishing. In a water world (with a variety of terrains available) you’ll probably want both of these abilities.

Graphically, The Battle of Polytopia boasts a cute aesthetic with bright colors and blocky sprites reminiscent of Minecraft. It works well, creating an inviting world full of villages, mines, and crops that dot the landscape. I will accompany you.

Weirdly, you can only use one controller in multiplayer mode. It doesn’t matter in the sense that he can only play one at a time anyway. Have One controller, why not make this an option? Change this setting so everyone can use their own controller without having to reach out and hand over control after their turn is over. must be It makes more sense if you’re playing in handheld mode. Here you can pass the entire switch.

The controls work well and most actions are mapped to buttons. Handheld mode allows for touchscreen controls that recall the game’s mobile origins. This is a fun way to play. My only criticism of the controls is the weird cursor movement. When you alternate players, the cursor should start in the upper right corner of the screen, move the cursor to the “start turn” button in the middle of the screen and press A. This seems unnecessary. Just tapping the A button is enough and makes the user experience even better.

The game retails for $14.99, which seems like a reasonable price. There’s a lot of replay value here, with different maps generated each time you play. The amount of customization in multiplayer mode is also impressive. You can choose the size of the world, the number of players (up to 4 local his players) and the tribe to start with.

Overall, The Battle of Polytopia is a fun game to expand your empire. Cute graphics and a variety of options make for a fun and welcome addition to your Nintendo Switch library.
