Unlike previous Team Ninja games, Rise of the Ronin seems to be aiming for an open-world experience. You play as one of the honorable ronin (ronin) at a pivotal turning point in Japanese history. The stage of the game is the end of the Tokugawa period, 1863. This year is the year that Commodore Perry arrived and opened the port.
America’s “gunboat diplomacy” finally forced Japan to open its doors to foreign technology. This eventually led to the decline of the Tokugawa Shogunate and the Meiji Restoration.
