hello everyone! I’m Ebb Software’s technical his artist, Jovan. The entire team here delights in delivering a nightmarish experience that completely immerses you in a dark tapestry. And today, we are happy to announce that our first game, Scorn, is coming to PlayStation 5 later this year.
Many of you here may be new to Scorn, so for those less familiar with the game, it’s a terrifying adventure like no other. Trapped and stranded in a world of strange biomechanics, you must find your way through a decaying civilization populated by twisted and grotesque creatures. The game allows you to wield a wide variety of weapons, but Scorn isn’t a shooter, so every encounter can quickly turn deadly. With ammo and lives in short supply, it is often advised to use your wits to avoid direct confrontation. Instead, you’ll need to resurrect and activate abandoned contraptions to progress through this enchanting labyrinth. Part machine, part flesh, all fear.
We would like to liken it to a nightmare experience. Most often, nightmares are described as intense subjective experiences that can be extremely distressing and frightening, provoke emotional reactions in the dreamer, and trigger feelings of fear, anxiety, and terror. Scorn seeks to deliver these feelings to the player in a very subtle way, through oppressive atmospheres and dimly lit corridors.
PS5 immersion input
While developing games for the PlayStation 5, we finally had the opportunity to harness the potential of the DualSense wireless controller to further immerse ourselves in this twisted world and extend Scorn’s synesthesia experience. This allows the player to feel even more immersive and let the whole world “breathe” in a new way. Since the game has no voice interaction, the emphasis is on environmental storytelling, which makes haptics a great addition to this unique audiovisual experience.
The main character of the game uses his hands to interact with the world. Most of these interactions are also painful for the characters. That’s where haptics come into play. The image presented to the player’s eyes is painful in itself, but we wanted to enhance that feeling by giving the hand holding the controller a feeling. Players can also feel the haptic direction (left hand or right hand), further enhancing the experience.
From minimal interactions, such as feeling the low vibrations of an organic head-mounted display, to situations in which players encounter dire and dangerous encounters, DualSense controller haptics balance the intensity of vibrations according to the environment. This enhances the sense of immersion. – Game sounds.
We’ve also made the DualSense controller’s adaptive triggers immersive when players need to use tools and weapons to survive. Every weapon and tool has a subtle but different weight. For example, melee tools like pistons, used to manipulate various devices or in some desperate attempts at self-defense, have a certain resistance to their triggers, and when used in conjunction with haptics, their desired effect is enhanced. increase.
Finally, the DualSense controller’s light bar represents player health and changes color depending on the appropriate situation. This is a small addition to Scorn’s very minimalist HUD. The idea is that players can get instant information about their HP status while playing the game.
Balancing the features of the DualSense controller was no easy task, but the coordination between TechArt, programming and the audio team managed to pull it off and create something special for PlayStation 5 players. rice field.
