imminent Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 The Comic-Con panel will be about Venom. However, Insomniac Games released some details about the villain just before the start of the tournament, and even released new screenshots showing off his long tongue and sharp teeth.
Spider-Man 2’s Venom Will Be Different, According To Insomniac
Various members of Insomniac provided the scoop entertainment weekly. Creative director Brian Intihar said he was nervous about casting because he knew Venom was “highly anticipated and people would have a lot of opinions about it.” Intihar heard some of Tony Todd’s lines in the trailer for the 2021 movie Candyman and realized that Todd had actually auditioned for the role of Venom.
“All the things we talked about [with] Venom, that sense of strength, that sense of terror, that sense of overwhelm, very different from Peter, but Tony embraces that perfectly in his performance,” Intihar said.
Intihar elaborated on Todd’s performance, saying it gave the team “more confidence” in the character’s design.
“For us, Venom is a host and a symbiont,” Intihar said. “You don’t get Venom unless you both connect. It’s that bond that Tony stands for. If anything, I think casting Tony gave me more confidence in the character’s visual design.”
Intihar also talked about wanting Insomniac to do something different in the first game than he did with Doc Ock. And according to him, Venom fits that requirement.
“We wanted to try something completely different, but I don’t think there’s anything quite as different from ‘Doc Ock’ as ‘Venom’,” Intihar said. “It’s about power, it’s about strength, it’s about being neglected, and it’s about Peter’s greater involvement in the creation of Venom. I think that’s what fascinated us.”
Senior Narrative Director John Puckett agreed, noting that the symbiote provided a lot of great material for Peter Parker’s struggles as Spider-Man.
“One of the great things about Spider-Man as a character is that he always has to make sacrifices,” Puckett said. “So to speak, this symbiote provides a large supply of grain for the mill.”
Senior Art Director Jacinda Chu talks about Venom’s design and how it was difficult to get the basics perfect, from the spider insignia to the presence or absence of lips, as the goal was to make Venom feel both scary and somehow relatable. She then talked more about the character, explaining the allegorical meaning behind Venom, albeit in a strange way.
“It’s very interesting when you start thinking about what makes him different from Spider-Man,” Chu says. “The symbiote is best known as an allegory of darkness that the host is fighting against. So what makes him the anti-Spider-Man?”
Insomniac will talk more about Venom at a Comic-Con panel scheduled for July 20th at 2:30 PM PT in Hall H. There may be a few other tidbits about the game as a whole, but the title is Marvel’s Spider-Man 2: Symbiotic Relationships, so it’s clear where the focus is. The panel will include Intihar, Puckett, and Chu, along with Game Director Ryan Smith and Marvel Games Vice President and Creative Director Bill Roseman. It will also feature various actors such as Yuri Lowenthal (Peter Parker), Nadj Jeter (Miles Morales), Laura Bailey (Mary Jane Watson) and Tony Todd (Venom).
After Venom’s very brief appearance in the first trailer, the studio was pretty cautious about it. It says that the host is not Eddie Brock, and that he has only been seen in one screenshot since then. Insomniac seems to be trying to keep the symbiote’s personality and other aspects a secret, further fueling leak allegations and speculation.
