Square Enix has announced that a new strategic RPG game, The Diofield Chronicle, will be available on Steam on September 22nd. Click here for the game’s Steam page (Opens in a new tab) The demo will be released on August 10th and the stored data can be carried over to the entire game.
The publisher describes Diofield Chronicle’s combat as a real-time tactical combat system that issues “decisive orders that take advantage of the strengths and weaknesses of the army over the enemy.” This is a gridless 3D strategy game that plays in real time, but seamlessly overlays the battlefield and has the ability to pause order bits that disappear after being instructed.
The game setup is a fairly typical world of fantasy RPGs involved in endless wars, commanding a band of mercenaries called Blue Fox. The character design is by Taiki (Lord of Vermilion III, IV), and the orchestrated soundtrack is by composers Ramin Djawadi and Brandon Campbell, best known for Game of Thrones’ work.
SQUARE ENIX has a long and prominent history in this genre, behind some of the best examples of strategies or tactics RPGs have ever created. Some of the Diofield Chronicle traps may seem a bit unfamiliar, but the diorama-style visuals are beautiful and it’s easy to see if this new combat system is as special as the publisher thinks.
