The Journey of BlazBlue Entropy Effect X

  • Michael Jiang, CEO, 91Act and Director of BlazBlue Entropy Effect X

Summary

  • Learn how the team at 91Act worked to develop a follow-up to their BlazeBlue fighting game series.
  • BlazBlue Entropy Effect X combines multiple genres in a way that feels distinctly BlazBlue.
  • BlazBlue Entropy Effect X launches February 12, 2026, for Xbox Series X|S.

From day one, the team at 91Act carried an ambitious vision: to stand out on the global stage of action game development. Even their name, “91Act,” is a pun of the phrase “Jiu Yao ACT” (means “We only want to make ACT games”) in Chinese – a nod to the team’s desire to express creativity freely in the 2D action game scene.

They chose to base their studio in the ancient city of Chengdu – famous for pandas, Szechuan cuisine, mahjong, and Daoist culture, hoping its laid-back atmosphere would inspire calm focus and imaginative thinking to constantly crank out the best action games. This is where BlazBlue was born.

Over the years, the studio’s history became something of a legend among fans. More than a decade ago, founder Michael Jiangleft Tencent to create 91Act, and with just a single demo, convinced Arc System Works to grant them the license to develop official BlazBlue mobile titles. After many years refining their craft in mobile development, the studio resolved to answer a long-standing request from the community, and to pursue the dream embedded in their own name: to build a top-tier single-player action game.

That commitment came with enormous cost. As the studio approached its 10th anniversary, they found themselves on the brink of bankruptcy and dissolution. But just when things seemed almost hopeless, everything changed thanks to the outpouring of support from the community. The game they had poured their hearts and soul into achieved overwhelming success, allowing the team to return, rebuild, and rise again. Arc System Works recognized that passion by granting even deeper access to the BlazBlue universe – including a fully original storyline written by the series’ original scenario author. The result was BlazBlue Entropy Effect X, an action-roguelite featuring 14 fan-favorite characters from the BlazBlue universe, combined with a brand-new original storyline.

BlazBlue Entropy Effect X combines multiple genres in a way that feels distinctly BlazBlue: Roguelite RNG and build-crafting; stylish, responsive action gameplay; and combo-driven fighting-game fundamentals. Here, you’ll “dive” into a mysterious dimension known as the Sea of Possibility, to complete the so-called “salvage operations” while collecting “Shards of Possibility” tied to stories from the BlazBlue universe.

Here, each dive is a fresh run. Clear one combat room to earn Potentials, unlocking new moves and abilities. Enter another to gain Strategies, granting attribute-boosting effects to enhance your attacks. Stumble into the Black Market Vendor, where you can sacrifice existing perks for extreme, high-risk bonuses.

Room by room, build by build, the adventure evolves. Until finally, you stand before the boss with only your earned skills and your sharpened technique determining your fate.

When BlazBlue Entropy Effect X launches on February 12, 2026, players will not only have access to the full roster of 14 BlazBlue characters—but also two guest characters from iconic indie hits – Icey from Icey, and The Beheaded from Dead Cells. Both will arrive as free DLC characters right at launch.

And if you’re wondering why a mysterious girl with a giant sword and a headless prisoner capable of wielding dozens of weapons are appearing here… well, this is the Sea of Possibility after all. Strange visitors are practically expected.

So, get ready to dive in starting on February 12, 2026, when BlazBlue Entropy Effect X launches on Xbox Series X|S.
