The launch of Tower of Fantasy, a new free-to-play MMO-like action game, has been rocky.Hordes of players crash into servers (opens in new tab) I got queues and errors and can’t join the game. And now, with so many of them starting to join, they realize the game isn’t quite prepared for them.
Players are sharing all sorts of ridiculous bugs and glitches they encounter as they start digging into messy Genshin Impact clones (opens in new tab). This glitch caused SivHD’s 3D animated characters to be squashed into 2D characters. The juxtaposition in which the camera rotates around flat characters standing in 3D valleys is just like Paper Mario. At some point, the streamer will tilt the camera so that the character is just a thin vertical line.
It’s not entirely clear how this glitch works. SivHD found that having a character sit in a turret and quickly exiting it would crush it. If you repeat it several times, it will become thinner than a crepe. My guess is some animation he bug when the character jumps into the seat.Something about how the model stretches to sell quick movements, like how the animation is full smear frame (opens in new tab), may be the culprit. For a split second, it’s as if the character becomes a 2D model of him, after which some of his 2D nature is erroneously retained. Whatever the reason, glitches are very interesting to watch.
Some time after the discovery, SivHD was asked by someone in chat if glitches were important to progressing through the game.
“This is important because when I get close to my enemies, they don’t see me coming,” says SivHD responded, deadpan, while scooping his papercraft hero near an unaware enemy camp. “Can you see that shooter? He’s not looking at me.”
Developer Hotta Studio has addressed the rough state of the game. Position “We were well aware that Tower of Fantasy still has many shortcomings,” it said on the site. We have committed to addressing the worst bugs that have arisen and to compensate players with in-game currency. This has already started for the first server instability.
The growing list of bugs is a little surprising for a game that was released in China last year and entered beta earlier this year. Combined with the power of a dedicated human player, stomping bugs is probably a tremendous task. If it were me, I would keep the 2D ones. All anime games should be able to change to 2D at any time.
