Valkyrie Elysium definitely has something of an old school feel to it. A series that began in 1999 with his turn-based JRPG Valkyrie Profile. This is a game with an almost PlayStation 2-style design philosophy for better or worse, and what you’re here for determines whether its outdated approach appeals to you. or not.

Set in the midst of Ragnarok, the end of the world in Norse mythology, the dashing king Odin created beings known as Valkyries in the aftermath of his apocalyptic war against a great bad wolf named Fenrir. did. You play as one of these Valkyries, and Odin’s bidding includes many adventures using a variety of weapons in his nine levels set in a variety of different but often aesthetically similar locations. It involves smashing monsters.

The story isn’t much, and if you’re here to rip threads about gods, kings, and mythical beings, there’s not much to sink your teeth into. Your Valkyrie might be cold and monotonous for most of the game, and Odin might be wearing a T-shirt with “I’m actually evil” printed across his chest. And while some of my comrades add a little spice to the progression, Valkyrie Elysion is an almost unattractive affair.

The lack of flavor extends to level design as well. Like many early 3D games, the places you visit are mostly large empty spaces. Artificial, drab and lifeless, as if you exist only to fight. We know it’s an apocalypse, but it feels like there is, or has never been, anyone in this world beyond the handful of characters you meet on your journey. There are few collectibles to find, and simple side quests to unlock, but exploration is basically non-existent.

And then there are the graphics. There’s something bewildering about Valkyrie Elysium’s visuals. Characters and certain elements within the environment are highlighted with thick black outlines that might work in a more visually adventurous title, but here Valkyrie and her party members are in the same world as the locale. It means that they don’t seem to belong to. It’s like bad CGI in a live action movie, it sticks out like a sore thumb and can be very uncomfortable to watch.

If that wasn’t enough, the cutscenes are hampered by dangerous lip-syncing and some silly animations. Slight dips are very rare. When you say Valkyrie Elysium is a PlayStation 3 game remastered for PS5, believe it.

Everything we’ve just said probably sounds very offensive, but there’s no doubt that this game certainly has its flaws. If you just want a hacking and slashing action RPG that offers combat and interesting mechanics, I think Valkyrie Elysium mostly delivers.

It has all of the usual fast and heavy attacks and magical spells and dodges you’d expect in a game of this ilk, but you can also summon Einherjars (emergence of warriors) to aid in combat. Recruit soldier spirits throughout your adventure, and once they’ve joined your party, you can summon them by holding R1 and tapping the face button. Customize how long summoned friends stay by your side in battle. Offsetting is that the longer they stay, the less often they can be summoned.

Each summon has additional bonuses, summoning an Einherjar imbues the weapon with the elements associated with that warrior. So if you’re fighting a fire monster, and that fire monster hates ice, summoning an ice einhejar will result in your ghostly friend doing more damage to the creature with its attacks, but with a weapon Bonus damage is also applied to

All enemies have a weak point, and if the enemy continues to deal damage that is a weak point, it will eventually enter a “shattered” state. This basically means that enemies can be immobilized for a short period of time and cry. until they popped out of it. He can summon two of her Einherjars at once, and knowing when to summon which one to exploit an enemy’s weakness is his one of the joys of battle.

Another inspirational option for combat is Soul Chain. In layman’s terms, it’s a magical grappling hook. Tap L2 when targeting an enemy to hook onto the enemy and quickly move to their position. Soul Chain’s range is so wide that combat becomes a ballet of attack and dodge, quickly moving to another enemy on the other side of the room, dispatching them, and quickly moving to the boss where he unleashes Einherjar. increase. A large attack comes from the boss using the Soul Chain and can be seen zipping to another enemy far away to avoid the explosion.

The levels are very short and should not take you more than an hour to see them all. The whole game he finished in 16 hours. Brevity is a virtue here. There’s really no padding, except for some side quests that feel superfluous. Combat is the most powerful hand in the game, but with a limited pool of enemies to face, it was a wise decision to keep the adventure short and sweet and finish it before it got old.

Conclusion

Valkyrie Elysium is a two part game. The level designs and goals feel at least two generations ahead of him, and the characters and storylines are more of placeholders than finished products. There’s no capital F sentiment here, nor does it get in the way of narrative justification, but if that’s okay with you and you want 15 to 20 hours of fast, frantic, fluid combat, this can be recommended.
