The Nintendo Switch has proven to be groundbreaking on many levels, but as with many consoles, accessibility remains one of the main features it can improve.2017 Console Rating by Able Gamers Charity We confirmed this by commenting on the Switch’s “zero accessibility features” at launch. Kumeri Akagi created a Joy-Con adapter to start reversing these issues.
Kuumeri’s design (shown in the video above) works to address certain dexterity issues some gamers experience as a result of the console’s traditional two-handed approach to gaming. Flip a single Joy-Con to the upside down position and the adapter lets you play the console’s two-hand control system from one controller’s button inputs.
Starting with the basic design of the Switch’s comfort grip, Kuumeri has tweaked the depth of the standard handle to account for one-handed play, and added extensions that allow the Joy-Con to grip even when the controller is upside down. Button D-Pad can now be used.
An adapter allows full control of the joystick by moving accessories on the surface below (the video demonstrates this functionality on a table, but the design is also suitable for sitting on legs) . It occupies both Joy-Cons, and accessories are available in both left-handed and right-handed editions.
No design for this caliber would be complete without a fully working demonstration. Kuumeri’s video shows the device in action, beating the Moblin in Breath of the Wild and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. You can even beat your opponent.
Accessibility issues in gaming aren’t solved with a single solution, but the device seems very versatile. Kuumeri has made this adapter (and for many other consoles) available for his PC. Etsy We currently have many 5 star reviews.
